Description
Please do not feed bread to the ducks.
It is highly dangerous to their health.
Healthy alternative are peas, oatmeal and corn.
WHY YOU SHOULD NOT FEED BREAD TO DUCKS!
Some of the bread we toss to waterfowl inevitably escapes their grasp. If enough calorie-
rich foods accumulate in a pond, they — along with all those extra duck droppings — can
trigger algae blooms that deplete oxygen from the water. Known as hypoxia, this can
wipe out pond life and rob birds of natural food supplies.
On land, any moldy leftovers lying around could be particularly dangerous if ducks eat
them. This is also a risk when people feed ducks bread that has already spoiled it's
potentially fatal.
The birds get addicted to it, and will find it very difficult eating, or wanting to eat,
anything else. So, at the very least, feeding ducks bread is giving them a readily-
accessible unhealthy diet, leaving them ultimately malnourished.
At the far end of the spectrum, there’s “angel wing.” This is a disturbing condition that
causes the bird’s wings to point out laterally, rather than resting against the body,
rendering them in many cases unable to fly. It’s an incurable condition brought about as
a result of a high-calorie diet, one extremely high in protein and carbohydrates, and low
in vitamins D, E and manganese – the exact diet a bird would get if they primarily ate
white bread. Without being able to fly, these birds soon die. “Large amounts of bread
and other human foodstuffs can be harmful to wildfowl, leading to potentially fatal or
disabling health conditions. Uneaten food can also cause changes to the chemical and
bacteriological content of water, increasing the risk of avian disease.”
