The most beautiful castle I visited while in Scotland! Well worth the drive and definitely go inside to see the... beautiful artifacts and historical pieces.Richard was fabulous and gave my friends and I a proper tour in the first main room, with a lovely historical explanation of how the castle came to be. This is one of the filming sites of the movie Highlander. Magnificent scenario with the castle siting on an island.... Give that sense of being transported back to the Middle Ages with all the natural elements surrounding the castle being there.Apart from the beauty of the site, it has all the necessary facilities like, cafe, food hall, gift shop, toilets and a good size car park.No need to buy tickets in advance as they’re available on-site from the ticket office or the automatic machines. Also, tickets are available to go inside the castle or just to see its surroundings.read more

Had a wander around the castle grounds on our way back from Isle of Skye. As it was after 5pm, you don't have to pay... for parking (£3) or exterior castle ticket (£3). Access across the bridge is open. When you are coming over Loch Long Bridge A87 you catch sight of this wonderful picturesque castle. Eilean Donan Castle was our favorite castle visit while in Scotland. Although it has been restored in part throughout... the years, it had the most history told throughout the walk around.I’d mention that several spaces inside do not allow photography, which really means that I needed to take the time to read and absorb what I saw. There is a specific pathway to take so that you don’t get lost or revisit something you might have seen before. There are ample representatives who will assist if needed. The gift shop was great, there is a food/drink desk and diner available before going on the bridge to the castle (no food or large bags allowed). We went on a tour, so our tickets were assigned a specific time, though we were allowed in a little earlier. The history of the castle was so wonderful, and the setting, displays, and information boards were phenomenal.read more

Absolutely outstanding castle, in a stunning location. This really is a must-see for anyone visiting the area. The... facilities are excellent and every member of staff we came into contact with was friendly and helpful. Nice castle with working fireplaces, which were lit. The kitchen contained some items that I hadn't seen elsewhere, for... example, a chandelier type contraption to hang your pots and pans from. More signs would have been good to explain these. Some of the corridors were rather narrow, to the point where you had to walk through them sideways. Driving up the A87, I saw something that I thought only existed in fiction. About a mile up the road was Eilean Donan... castle. "I don't care how late we are, I'm stopping to see this." I thought to myself. You will not be disappointed. Look at the pictures. Even if you don't like history, you just have to go here. See it, be immersed. And for fear of us all spoiling it, support the people that maintain this place for literally thousands of tourists every year to enjoy. If they didn't do their job, the serenity and beauty of this place would be lost forever. I recommend sunset on a clear day for a view that will stay with you forever. For a more peaceful distant view, about a mile or so South, on the northbound side of the A87, is a rest area overlooking the entire Loch and castle. But don't cheap out, go see it up close too!read more

Lovely display of old... paintings, pictures, artefacts and furniture from the old days from billeting room to bedrooms to kitchen and larder. Giving it 4 stars only because this was the one castle which did not allow photography whilst inside...which given how amazing it all was was just a shame. However this castle is still privately owned by the family so I can understand why they may want to exercise some restrictions.read more

Eilean Donan Castle, a beautiful placed castle with views for days, Scenic and full of very Confident robins. The food... we ordered from the modern visitor centred was good, the gift shop has some real nice bits it, reasonably priced i would say too. But when we have the castle, as lovely as it is, It is not worth £10 pp to walk around. The castle is very small and will only take you 20 minutes max at a slow walk, If you use the Audio guide a little longer but eveb someone who worked there said its probably not worth taking one. Aye the castle was warm, a fire in every room with someone to ask questions, but only 4* as £10 is steep for what you get.read more

A beautiful place to visit. We came here in mid-October when it's much quieter than in the summer, which I think was a... bonus as we were able to go at our own pace and chat to the very knowledgeable staff. I particularly liked David who showed us 'the shoes that follow you around the room' and gave us some added information about the spy holes in the main room. Food selection is local and decent too. So glad we decided to break up our journey from Fort William to Skye here, highly recommend.read more

An interesting place to visit. There is a lot of local history based around the castle and you learn about that on the... tour. There is also loads about the individual who restored the castle and brought it back to its former glory. His name escapes me now. It's understandable that this would be done, but it does seem to over shadow the older history of the castle, which I would have liked them to have further expanded on.I recommend a visit.read more

It's nice castle to visit, look much more impressive at night from the road (as I first seen it), I read online... comments that the beauty is when the is high tide (or no low tide), I came when there was low tide and is was less impressive (castle surrounded by seaweeds).Inside the rooms are pretty small.Didn't take the audio guide(my young son took all my attention), I assume with the guide it is more interesting.I don't understand why there is a strict ban of taking photos inside.read more

There is some construction work being done on part of the site, which impedes access for some. There were no visible... disabled parking spaces, but the visibility was poor due large puddles and very heavy rain. When approached by a passenger the parking attendant quickly helped by pointing me to a suitable spot near the cafe. The castle itself is stunning, it features on dozens of calendars and post cards all over the world. Good reason it is beautiful. The entry fee includes a recorded informative tour of the castle. Families? Make use of discounts for the children. Coffee and baking in the cafe is very good. If you visit on a hot day then the ice cream is super yummy according to my granddaughters training as Google reviewers. Our visit was mid October and it was dreach and dreary weather but the glimpse of blue sky lasted an hour or so after about a weeks rainfall fell in the previous hour. !read more

A castle with a rich history, and showings in memorable Hollywood films. It was beautiful from the outside! The inside was far from impressive. It was the priciest castle we visited on our... vacation and there was very little history. What they displayed and discussed was mainly how the new owner renovated. It was full of color photos of her family, like little snapshots. No photography was allowed and most areas were roped off. It seemed like it was mainly her saying "look what I did and look what I have". Sadly, I left disappointed.read more

One of Scotland's most famously photographed castles. Picturesque even on a Rainy Day! Restaurant very disappointing... and expensive! £9.75 for the Steak pie (pictured) and "veg" but NO gravy, even when I asked for some, restaurant staff not the most helpful! "If its not out, then there is none". Should have gone for the baked potato!! On my bucket list since Highlander was filmed here in 1986. Beautiful setting where three lochs merge. It's not a large... castle and two hours is probably enough for the tour. The history part is quite good and the audio tour is very good and included in price. Visited in August this year and was very busy. Free parking and ample car parking spaces. Not as special as most reviews say. It's a very small castle on a tidal islet surrounded by water or kelp. Very... crowded. Nicest views are actually from the outside so best to arrive at 5 when they don't sell tickets anymore and you can't enter the exhibition but they do let you cross the bridge.
